RIP for June & July 2012

I been meaning to pay tribute to the recent deaths in the genre, but with Sage Stallone's death last night, I knew I had to, now. They say these things come in three and sadly that seems to be the case, here. It's never easy to write these, and it's never something I look forward to. But, alas it's a part of everyone's life.

Richard Lynch-  Lynch passed away last month on the 19th of a heart attack. I was immediately saddened. Lynch was a great heavy and always owned the screen whenever he was on. While Lynch was in countless movies, its two roles of his that remain my favorites:
  
Invasion USA- One of my all time favorite Chuck Norris movies, Invasion deals with a group of terrorists/ commies invading the US (duh!), and Norris, the resident Florida badass, being the lone man against them. It's fast paced and totally ludicrous. But, then there in lies one of the movie's charms. It racks a ridiculous body count and is righteously violent. But, it's Lynch who really owns the film. His role as the psychopathic leader of the terrorist group ranks as one of action cinema's best villains. The scene where a junkie chick is snorting coke, and then gets her head slammed on to the table, as the pick goes up her nose, and then gets thrown out the window as her criminal boyfriend (played by a young Billy Drago) gets shot in the balls by Lynch (something he does TWICE in the movie!) is brutal and badass. That sets up the movie and, more so, Lynch's character perfectly.

Ernest Borgnine- Ernest passed away this month on the 8th at 95 of renal failure. I was a fan of his since I was a little kid. Back then I knew from two things, mostly. The first being the 80s TV show Airwolf, a show that probably doesn't hold up much today but inarguablely had a badass copter, the other being John Carpenter's Escape from New York, where he played Cabbie. It's a cool role in one of my favorite Carpenter films. The Wild Bunch- But way before he worked with Carpenter he starred in my favorite western of all time, this classic by Sam Pekinpah. This story about a group of outlaws who go for one final shoot-out is one of the most important and influential movies in the genre, ever. It's ultra-violent and stylized, gory shoot-outs changed cinema forever. Borgnine gives a great performance, as does the rest of the cast. By the way, if you truly want to experience this movie, get the blu-ray. It's a sight to behold and worship!!

Another role of his that I loved was Mermaid Man on Spongebob Squarepants. This fun parody of DC's Aquaman is one of the most endearing character's on one of the greatest toons ever. And, one of the only human (or sort of human) characters in the series. He was so funny in this!

Sage Stallone- Last night it was revealed that the eldest son of Sylvester Stallone, Sage, had passed away. He was only 36 and may have been dead for three days prior. The cause of death is still under investigation. While, most mainstream audiences best remember him from roles in movies like Rocky V and Daylight, horror fans best know him because of his love of the genre. He started and ran Grindhouse Releasing, which put out pristine and remastered releases of films like Lucio Fulci's masterpiece The Beyond (a movie that was previously only available as the butchered Seven Doors of Death in the US), Ruggero Deodato's controversial, brutal, and never before legally released in the US Cannibal Holocaust, and Umberto Lenzi's dumb but nasty Cannibal Ferox (formerly known as Make Them Die Slowly), as well as many other genre films. He never let his last name get to his head and was a true fan. He was one of us.  

 

May they all RIP and my condolences, thoughts, and prayers go their loved ones.

Dear God No!

A vicious gang of murdering and raping bikers, The Impalers, invade a home after a bloody shoot out at a strip club. They hold the father, his daughter, and a couple hostage. Humiliation, rape, and murder follow, but there is something in the basement and in the woods... Sasquatch!

This totally politically incorrect exploitation throw back to the 70s is an amalgam of a biker film, a home invasion flick, a Bigfoot monster movie, and even some Nazisploitation. And, in the end, it's all fucking good!

From the get go you know know you're in for a film that don't fuck around, as it opens with a dead nun, who was clearly just raped and whose pussy is exposed. Her body, then, gets run through with a spinning biker wheel! From then on it's a movie where no one is safe, not even children or pregnant women. The gore and violence come in high amounts with vicious rape, stabbings, head-shots, blood rushing squibs, bisections, decapitations, and tons more as blood and even piss gets shot out! A guy even gets choked out with his own intestines! There are tons of holy shit moments, so I don't wanna reveal anymore. It's best you check them out yourself, and get your jaw to drop the way I did.

Like the movies it plays loving tribute to it features more than it's fair share of skin. Including a nice, long take of topless strippers dancing around, some of them wearing Nixon masks! Another highlight for skin fans will be the gorgeous Madeline Brumby who as the daughter, does her own striptease. She's got some pretty nice knockers, if I do say so myself.

The best acting has to come from lead baddie Jett Byrant is just an evil motherfucker! But, he is also pretty funny. The movie itself is funny as hell and has some great and priceless dialogue. It's certainly nasty, but it will make you laugh your ass off at times, and yet other times it totally kicks you straight in the nuts. Moving at a breakneck pace, it all leads to a killer climax and ending that is just fucking awesome!

In all, this crazy, over the top movie is one that fellow fans of 70s movies need to watch. Bricket is honest in his love for movies like this, and it is shown clearly here. This is not just another fake grindhouse movie. This one, dear friends and readers, is the real deal!

Hopefully this movie will hit blu-ray and DVD soon, as there is strong interest in having it get released. It's been getting a ton of good press and reviews, all of which it righteously deserves. When it does hit blu-ray, expect a ton of cool extras.

And, writer/ director Bickert told me he has just finished writing the sequel, Frankenstein Created Bikers (great title, by the way!), and plans to start shooting it in the Summer of 2012. I for one, can't wait, and when you see this flick, neither will you be able to wait! In fact, I think that Bickert is definitely one to watch, as he is the future of exploitation film making.

My Blog's First Award!

Woohoo! I just got the Liebster Blog award! The word liebster means "beloved" or "dearest". This is my blog's first award, and it's bestowed upon me by Son of Celluloid's blog. Coming from a blog that I love and find so fun to read, I find to be quite an honor and feel very humbled by it. He's got a great sense of humor and is a talented writer, who is a fellow fan of horror and pro-wrestling, making him an all around cool guy, in my book.

Raleigh Bronkowski's excellent blog on obscure horror and cult movies is one of the finest on the net. I admire his knowledge of awesome movies, some of which I never even heard of! The man is an encyclopedia of knowledge and his blog shows it! Some of the pics he posts get a little, as he puts it, "saucy", but in my book that just adds to the appeal! Go and check it out, I know I've learned about a great deal about the movies he covers just from reading this fellow Gorezoner's words.

Rare Flix In-Store Signing for Frank Henenlotter's "Bad Biology"

Hey, fellow horror and exploitation fans, you guys should go check out Media Blasters in-store signing of the DVD of Frank Hennonlotter's newest movie, Bad Biology. Hennonlotter is, of course, the writer/ director of the classic Basket Case Trilogy, Brain Damage (a personal fav of mine!), and Frankenhooker. His new flick is surely awesome. He will be at the signing along with actresses of the film: Beverly Bonner, Tina Krause, Vicky Wiese, and Rachel Robbins. This is taking place at the Rare Flix store in Secuacus, NJ this Saturday at 1-3PM.

The 10 Best Revenge Films of All Time

Yesterday, I saw Edge of Darkness with Mel Gibson. It featured a moving performance by him, a solid, well thought out plot, and some shocking bits of brutal violence. I think it is the best American made revenge film in recent years. But, what are the all time top ten? I love a good revenge film. It's a pretty simple idea. Our hero has something horrible happen to him/ her or to a loved one and then sets out to avenge that. The sub-genre can fall under action, exploitation, horror, or even sci-fi (Mad Max), but the best of the lot hit us with hard, vicious violence, as well as awakening an almost primal feeling in one. And, it should come to no one's shock that the Death Wish series and Chan Wook Park's films dominate this list. In the end, you owe it to yourself to see all these movies.

10. - Mixing horror, action, and gothic imagery this classic adaptation of the comic book is one of the most visually stunning and kick ass movies of the 90s, as our hero comes back from the grave to avenge the rape and death of his wife.

9. - The first of Park's fantastic revenge trilogy tackles the fact that when one wants revenge their is always another who will want to avenge that. And, hence it is a pointless, violent, and horrifying circle. Great acting, a wonderful plot, and an unforgettable climax make this a classic.

8. - After Paul Kersey's friend is killed by a gang of punks in Brooklyn, NY he (now back in NY) exacts his brand of vengeance and helps the scared community. One of the most wonderfully over the top and violent American action films of all time, Death Wish 3 has become a huge fan favorite and a classic over the years. The wild climax where senior citizen Charles Bronson mows down a seemingly endless group of punk scumbags using a Browning M1919 A4 machine gun, a .475 Widley Magnum, and (in the movie's wildest moment) a rocket launcher! All fucking hail Death Wish 3!

7. - Awesome, badass, and exploitative mix of the revenge film and the women in prison sub-genres. An amazing personal fav, this one has it all you could ask for: stylish movie directing, sexy, naked Japanese girls, red, hot lesbian action, graphic violence, and a great revenge story as our beautiful heroine seeks to get those who unjustly imprisoned her. The greatest women in prison film, ever!

6. - The sleaziest of the Death Wish series is, I think, the best sequel in the series. After his daughter is raped, (as is the housekeeper in a particularly mean spirited scene) again (!) and killed, Kersey goes off to kill the scumbags. Classic dialogue and graphic violence abound.

5. - The rape-revenge film is one of horror and exploitation cinema's nastiest sub-genres. This classic by Abel Ferrara is the best, in my humble opinion. A beautiful mute girl is raped twice in one day by two different pieces of shit. She flips out and eradicates scumbags and sexist men in what might be called a sort of feminist fantasy. Regardless of what you call it, this movie has excellent acting and some nice bits of bloody violence.

4. - When the shogun's decapitator's wife is killed by said shogun, our badass hero swears vengeance and wanders Japan with his cute little kid and armed carriage. My full review of this ultra-violent classic: http://gorezone.net/dvdcrypt/reviewstxt/stu/shogunassassin.html

3. - The single finest American made revenge film, this highly influential classic is not the bloodiest nor the wildest in the sub-genre, but it is smart and excellently directed. Liberal guy changes his ways after his wife is killed and raped, and his daughter raped, too. Lots of movies ripped this one off, many increasing the gore quota, but this remains a masterpiece.

2. - The most moving film in this list Lady Vengeance is the last film in Park's trilogy. This one feels different than the other ones in the series, probably cause our heroine has a truly understandable and just cause and the villain is so deplorable. An unjustly imprisoned woman looks to get her revenge and reunite with her little daughter. The climax of the film is amazing and moving. A beautifully made movie that never feels cheap or sleazy despite the graphic violence. The ending really pulls at your heartstrings. This one made me cray and only gets better with each viewing.

1. - The middle part of Park's trilogy, this story of a man who unjustly spends many years in jail is violent, shocking, and enthralling. The fight scene with the claw hammer kicks some major ass, while the ending is one of the finest and most shocking in movie history.
