Marilyn Manson- Guns, God, and Goverment: Live in L.A. (blu-ray)

This amazing blu-ray presents the last show of the tour in support of Holy Wood from the 90s. It's a killer show with a total of sixteen kick ass tracks. The concert opens up with the awesome Irresponsible Hate Anthem. From there awesome songs like The Fight Song, The Love Song, The Dope Show, and other classics get played.

Where the show really shines is, of course, in the performances. The lights, outfits, and sets makes for a truly kick ass show. The mix of shock and sex showcase what made Manson so infamous back, then. I wish I had been at this show!!!

The blu-ray is beautiful. A rich, gorgeous transfer with lively colors and a truly killer sound. Make sure you play this loud as hell! I loved this concert when I saw it years ago on PPV, now, it's even better! The extra feature is a 30 minute behind the scenes short film called The Death Parade. It has lots of boobs, cursing, and even peeing. Surely not for the easily offended, but then again why the fuck would they buy this in the first place?!

Immortal- Live at Wacken 2007- The Seventh Date of Blashyrkh

This kick ass live DVD of one of my favorite black metal bands, Immortal, was recorded at a 2007 show of the legendary metal festival Wacken in Germany. It's the band's first ever DVD.

The set consists of eleven killer tracks spanning from their first album to, my favorite album of theirs, Sons of Nothern Darkness. The band sounds amazing and the performances are totally face ripping. With tracks like One by One, The Sun no Longer Shines, and Tyrants (which has to be on one my absolute favorite black metal tunes, ever!) being particularly badass.

They put on a killer live show, with pyrotechnics and lights. A highlight has to be when they play Unholy Forces of Evil, and the lights turn red looking like hell, itself. In all, this is a brutal, technical, sound de force, a must for black metal fans!!

The picture in 16:9 looks AMAZING with lively colors that make you feel like you are right there! While, the stereo sound is perfectly mixed with excellent bass and thundering powering. The DVD also comes with a CD of the same performance. There are no extra features, though, but the fact that the performance is this damn good, and that it does come with a CD, makes it definitely worth your money.

Megadeth- Rust in Peace: Live

First and foremost Megadeth are my personal favorite band and Rust in Peace is my second fav album ever (for those curious Metallica- Master of Puppets is my fav album of all time). So, a live DVD of this thrash metal classic was a must have for me. It's a seminal album that shows them at their technical best.

They play the entire album, from beginning to end. What's awesome is that songs I never heard played live like Five Magics and Take No Prisoners are here and on the set-list. The set is blistering, and the band sounds amazing. Few bands can touch the technical veracity of Mustaine's mighty, metal machine. Highlights include killer performances of Holy Wars... The Punishment Due and Rust In Peace... Polaris.

In the extra features, we get five more Megadeth favs, including Trust, She-Wolf, and Peace Sells. There is also cool behind-the-scenes footage that includes band rehearsal. I would have wanted some interviews with the band reflecting on the album, but really this is minor complaint.

The picture in 16:9 widescreen looks perfect, and the 5.1 Dolby Digital is fucking killer. Pump this fucker loud!!! And, at the cheapth pricat i bought it at; it's a fucking steal! There is also a CD release of this, by the way.

In all, this DVD is a must for Megadeth fans!!!

DIO- HOLY DIVER LIVE

Being that Ronnie James Dio tragically passed away last week, losing his battle with stomach cancer, I felt the need to add more Dio to my collection. This live DVD, which I picked up for a mere seven bucks this week at FYE, more than fit the bill.

Shot in Britain on Oct. 22, 2005, Dio played all of his classic Holy Diver album, as well as other classics from his solo career, and even two Rainbow tracks (Gates of Babylon, Man on the Silver Mountain) and the all time Sabbath classic, Heaven and Hell. The concert, itself, clocks in at slightly over two hours and kicks major ass. From the opening of Tarot Woman to closing of the ass whooping We Rock, this is one hell of a live performance. Most touching now, is seeing how gracious Dio was with his fans. He was a great man and is a rock legend, for sure.

Ronnie's voice sounds amazing and the band is at their best. The transfer is simply gorgeous with stunning, lively colors. The sound is awesome, too. You can hear it either in Dolby Digital Stereo or Dolby Digital Surround 5.1.

As for extras, we get cool interviews with the band regarding playing in this show and tour. We also get linear notes form Classic Rock Magazine writer Dave Ling. In all, an excellent must have DVD.

Death Angel and Testament: New Thrash Masterpieces from Metal Masters

While, many bands have been trying to bring thrash back, with varying degrees of success, it is always nice when the originals come back and just destroy the competition. There in lies the latest work from Death Angel and Testament.

Death Angel's Killing Season , maybe their best work ever. While, the Filipino band were very young when they started and did some great work, Season is a masterpiece. It really shines as a heavy, head ripping, modern day thrash, destined to be, classic.

The musicianship is exemplary. The band shreds and rips through fast, ass-kicking songs, while all the time signer Mark Osegueda carries a great tune. Songs like "Soulless" have a great melody and heaviness about them that shows the best attributes of thrash metal. "Dethroned" and "Lord of Hate" are also great, though the whole album just rips. Plus, it lends itself to multiples listens. You sing along to it, bang your head, or jump into the pit.

Meanwhile, Testament's The Formation of Damnation is their best work since Souls of Black. Now, I think that the very heavy Low is a great album, but TFoD is just a great, head-crushing piece of work. Once, again Chuck Billy proves to have one of the best voices in all of thrash metal. The guitar work is exemplary. Songs like the devastating More than Meets the Eyes and the brutal Dangers of the Faithless bury the half-assed wanna-bes. Testament are truly back in full style.

ALL THAT REMAINS- LIVE

All That Remains is undoubtedly one of the best metalcore bands out there, and they are an amazing live band. This ass kicking DDV definitely captures. Shot at two different shows, one in Philadelphia and the other at Baltimore, there is more than 90 minutes of live mosh inducing music. The picture quality is nice and sharp, while the sound and recording of the live event has a nice kick to it.

The extras on it really capture the fun of the band. Included are some cool interviews with band where we learn that signer Phil Labonte is influenced by the vocals in Grave, but yet, also like Fall Out Boy(?!). Plus, we see how much the fans love these guys (rightfully so) and even both guitarists playing Guitar Hero. All six of their videos are included, as well as a making of the video for my fav song of theirs, The Air That I Breathe. Throw in a photo gallery and you have a must have DVD for ATR fans. ***1/2 out of ****

Exodus- The Atrocity Exhibition- Exhibit A

This Exodus is the second album with Rob Dukes, the third signer the thrash metal legends have had in their illustrious careers. With this album, I really think Rob has come into his own, as far as his place in Exodus is concerned.

The album opens with the instrumental Call to Arms. It then rips into the blistering Riot Act, the first single off the album, and just proceeds to run right over you like a Mack truck being driven at thunderous speeds. Songs like Funeral Hymn, Children of a Worthless God, and The Atrocity Exhibition exhibit the best aspects of classic thrash metal: fast, heavy, and pissed off.

Technically the band sounds tight with fast, ripping guitar riffs, pounding drums, and blistering leads. The talents of both guitarists Gary Holt and Lee Altus are at full order, here. Lyrically, the album is mostly anti-Christian, although the aforementioned Children of a Worthless God is anti-Islam.

Whatever the case maybe, Exodus prove they stand the test of time. While, some thrash legends like Metallica have abandoned the genre; Exodus have stood to their guns and delivered an awesome, ear bleeding experience. It should be dually noted that the slip cover hides the original artwork, which I guess was deemed offensive by some moron. Whatever the case maybe, the cool looking artwork rounds this must have for thrash metal fans everywhere. **** out of *****
