Blu-Ray & Some Titles I Reccomend

My short answer to the question of whether or not you should buy a blu-ray player is: yes, but of course, I'm gonna back that up. First and foremost is if you don't have an HDTV, then uh, no. Honestly, that should be on your next to do list. But, I would imagine most of you at this point do, so, let's take from there.

Now, you should definitely be using an HDMI cable when viewing HD content, otherwise, there ain't no fucking point. Also, don't be a sucker and buy one from a store. My friend was gonna get one using her points at GameStop, which she tells me is the equivalent of spending 40 bucks! What the fuck?! I gave her one of my HDMI cables that only costy me like 6 bucks, less maybe even. Where did I buy 'em? Amazon. So get your ass over there and order them. Fuck any store and their lame prices.

OK, so now you got your HDMI cable and HDTV, you're ready for the blu-ray upgrade. Now, the difference between DVD and blu-ray is not as huge as the laserdisc/ DVD difference, but it is present in the right titles. The last DVD player I had was upconverting to HD, so my DVDs looked great (blu-ray players do the exact same thing for DVDs, by the way). But, a lot of DVDs having been cutting back on their extra features to get you to make the move to blu-ray. It worked with me. As a movie geek I am a sucker for extra features. I needed to make the jump. With the price drop on machines (I have a Sony, by the way) and discs, I decided to make the move (moreso cause I had two discs that I got as a gift/ won, plus one that I, myself, had bought already). Since then, I have had my player since November of last year.

I don't think it is necessary to rebuy all of your DVDs on blu-ray. I won't be doing that, but if the extras are cool (or if the DVD was crappy to begin with), I will/ or have already done so.

Now, what blu-rays should you buy? Here are my top picks that are based off what I own, so far. On yeah, fuck 3D!! Don't waste your time with that shit. Well, I won't be that's for sure. Anyway, here ya go:

The Toolbox Murders- the first blu-ray I got while actually owning a player is this infamous late 70s slasher. It's a good little, sleazy flick, albeit flawed. The movie looks amazing, with rich blacks and colors and no real grain or noise. It's never looked better. Sure the movie is old and low budget, but the format really brings it out like never before. The same cannot be said for say a film like Evil Dead, where the imperfections come off more clearer. But, on a shot on 35mm film like this it is all win.

Taxi Driver- This is the best improvement over a DVD, I have, yet to see. It's really amazing just how good the movie looks. The colors are rich and strong. The shoot-out still looks very grainy, but that has more to do with them having to saturate the scene to get it past the MPAA. The extra features are from the DVD release before this, but I only owned the first DVD release, hence this was a no-brainer, must have for me. It should be for you, too. By the way, this still remains Scorsese's best movie. It's a powerful American movie classic.

2oth Century Fox blu-rays- I only own two of them: the fun The A-Team movie and the excellent psychological horror flick Black Swan. Both look great, Swan has some grain (but again that's due to the cameras used), but the real reason I am mentioning is that their blu-rays are so good, that you could watch any part of the movie, stop it, and come back to it, even a month later, having a watched a shitload of other blu-rays and DVDs, and they go right back to where you left off! Even, if it's an extra feature! So fucking cool! Even the best DVD/ DVD players couldn't do that!

Pornstar Superheroes- The only porno I own on blu-ray so far (I would like to get LOTS more!!), this is the best a skin flick has EVER looked! In fact, not only is this a great looking porno, but it ranks among the best looking blu-rays of ANY kind. It's so good that you can even see the pores on the skin of the cast! Asa Akira's ass looks more amazing than ever! I am working on a full review of this great disc and flick. Until then I say you need to get some HD porn and this is a PERFECT choice to start from, or continue from, for that matter!

True Blood Season 2- First off, why two and not three? Well, I don't own three. I think it was the series weakest season, so far. I'm not sure if I wanna own it. That said this is THE best looking blu-ray I have seen so far. Colors so bright, rich, and strong, that every single pore on an actor can be seen. This is the best season so far, and this beautiful disc set truly captures it. I thought this show looked nice on HBOHD, it's more jaw dropping now. An amazing disc that must be part of any Trubie collection.

Drive Angry- I got this with some b-day money having heard so much good things on it. I watched it last night and found it to be a thoroughly fun mix of action, horror, splatter, and exploitation. It failed at the BO, but you really need to see this one. I think the way this movie was advertised was all wrong. Satanists, gore, cars, babes (including the beautiful Amber Heard!), nudity, sex, and Satanism are all in here and all lead to good times.
Anyway, I want to say this is the regular blu-ray, not the 3D version. Like I already said fuck 3D! That said the disc looks amazing. The colors are vibrant and there is nothing bad to be said about it. Really and truly one of the best looking discs out there. The sound is aggressive, although the dialogue is slightly lower. But, that is really a minor complaint. See this one (and, I imagine quite a few of you have not) and get the fucking blu-ray!

Any other titles you guys recommend to own on blu-ray? Please share. And, for the rest of you, I hope this blog, helps you pick where you should start your collection or even add to your collection. So, here's to skin and gore in HD!!!!

Life Lessons from Horror Movies

Many like to pick on the horror genre mentioning all the supposed negative aspects of the genre. I, though, find that there are many great life lessons to be learned. Don't believe me? Read on, and you will see for yourself!

Help!- For example, if you need help, DO NOT ask a scary German guy for help. As seen in last year's Human Centipede, he'll sew you ass to mouth, with at least two other people attached to you. And, well that just can't be fun.

Love & Zombies-
We can also learn important tips on dating zombies. But, wait you say, there aren't any zombies in real life. Well, what about when the zombie apocalypse takes place, huh? Your gonna have to get some ass anyway, you can. Thank God, these movies can teach us what to do when in a relationship with the living dead. If you happen to have casual sex with a hot zombie chick be sure to, as Skid Row say in their song, tell 'em to "Get the fuck out!". Otherwise, as BurningAngel's horror/ porno Re-Penetrator teaches us, they rip you apart and eat you! On the bright side, he does die with, mostly, a smile, I suppose.

But, when in a serious relationship with a zombie, as seen in the classic Return of the Living Dead Pt. 3, you will have to deal with her cutting herself. But, on the bright side she'll have her tits out in the open! Of course, in the end you'll see that ultimately you'll have to kill yourself with her. Which while it maybe romantically tragic, it certainly doesn't do you any good whatsoever!

But, what if your crush, who doesn't know you have feelings for her, suddenly becomes a zombie? The answer to what to do can be found in the indie-horror flick Make Out with Violence. Anyways, you can take care of by keeping her in your friends room, changing her clothing, and keeping her in the bathtub. Feeding her live rats is also a good idea, but I think it would totally kill the mood! Still, you gotta feed her flesh eating desires somehow! This will eventually lead to bad shit, for sure, but hey, beggars can't be choosers!

Lava Lamps & Satan- I bet you didn't know this, but Satan lives in a lava lamp! Don't believe me? Well, then you clearly have not seen John Carpenter's highly enjoyable Prince of Darkness, and if you have seen it, then you ain't paying attention. Not only does the Lord of Flies live in one, but he can control bugs and bums! Plus, he spreads his evil though slime! So, next time you go to a friend's house and see that he/ she has a lava lamp, be careful! It might possess you and make you try and kill people researching the occult at some old church!

Ballet- I once thought that the only thing bad about the ballet is that it can put you to fucking sleep. But, I was wrong! Two great horror movies, thought me this. First off, Argento's classic Suspiria teaches us that a ballet school might be run by witches; who kill those who stand in their way. Their head witch can even bring the fucking dead back to life!! Shit!! That's scarier than freaking detention!

Of course, that's not the only issue here. Even if your school is not run by witches you might just go fucking insane! Last year's amazing psychological horror flick Black Swan warned us about this. You'll keep going more and more whacky, but it's not all bad. You do get to have hot lesbian fantasies about Mila Kunis! It's just the stuff that happens before and after that won't be fun! I guess you gotta take the good with bad!

So, there you have it. Horrors films are actually more educational about life than Sesame Street ever could be!

The 10 Best Movies of 2010

As another year has ended it is time for my list of the year's best. Once again, this list is not at all like the other best of movie list out there. And, I wouldn't have it any other way! By the way, I didn't see Inception, The Fighter, or True Grit, so just warning you. I'll see them eventually, but really I am in real rush to do so. Anyways, here's they are:

10. The Runaways- Here's a film I was curious about since I first heard about it. I'm a fan of the band and of the beautiful Kristen Stewart. I had a feeling she could do some great acting if given a good script. This is the proof of it! She really IS Joan Jett! I actually questioned the casting of Dakota Fanning, as I was never a fan, really, and I thought she might be too young to be sexy. But, she more than delivered. Great acting from the whole cast, this is a solid bio-pic.

9. Bad Biology- While this movie was made two years ago it was not given a proper release till last year. About time, too. It's Frank (Basket Case Trilogy) Henenlotter's best work in years. Funny, gory, sexy, and jaw-dropping, this over-the-top horror/ comedy shows that he is definitely one of horror's most audicious and fun filmmaker's. No one makes a movie like him! And, there is NO movie, in any year, that is like this one. Mutant penis and vagina. Yep, you read that right. The lead actress is quite yummy, too. If you ain't seen this one, then you need to, but not if your easily offended. But, if you are, then why are reading my blog?!

8. The Expendables- An action fans' wet dream come true, this has just about anyone you could want from action cinema in it. Stallone's directing keeps things moving fast, and the movie is a ton of fun. The copious amounts of graphic violence gives it a further kick in the ass. One of the year's most satisfying, as far as hype goes anyways, movies.

7. Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy- While both Halloween and Friday the 13th have had docus made on them, this one on the Nightmare movies is the best one. In fact it is one of the finest and most comprehensive docus in the history of horror cinema. Everything you could ever want to know and more (and even more, with the DVD's extra features!) is included. Great interviews and always entertaining. It might clock in at three hours, but if you are a true fan, you'll never feel it. Extra points for not covering the remake (surely one of last year's worst films!)!

6. Edge of Darkness- Before I go any further, let's get one thing clear: Mel Gibson is a fucking asshole. I can't fucking stand him (and I used to be a huge fan). But, let's base this movie on it's own credit, not on the dickhead in the lead role. A well directed, intense, and smart revenge film, EoD keeps you on the edge (pun not intended) of your seat. It also manages to tug at the heart, and the brutal violence reminds you of the sub-genre you are viewing. And, as much as I hate to admit it, Mel pulls off a great performance. It's a shame his idiotic behavior made this one get lost by some fans.

5. Toy Story 3- Pixar does it again! They pull off another great animated movie that makes my list for the third year in a row! As Darth Vader would say, "Impressive! Most impressive". This movie manages to be exciting, funny, and, even, touching. The best entry in the series, and the single best animated movie of last year!

4. Piranha 3D- This is THE best remake of 2010, in fact it ranks as one of the best remakes in the history of mankind. It also happens to be the best 3D movie of last year (the worst 3D movie is also the worst movie, of last year- Resident Evil: Afterlife). Anyways, this is one of 2010's most fun movie going experiences. It's wonderfully exploitative and totally funny. And, the gore? Wow!! This one pushes the R-rating to its limits. Bissecetion, castration, floating implants, etc, this one turns the blue waters bloody red. The cast is cool, too, with Jerry O'Connel as a sleazy pornographer getting my fav asshole role of the year. Then, there are the babes that include porn star Riley Steele and the still beautiful Elizabeth Shue. And, even Gianna Michaels has a cameo. There is tons of nudity and lesbian action. Fuck man, this movie has just about everything!!!

3. Machete- Speaking about movie that has it all, Machete, is another that does. Hot girls, ultra-violence, and the coolest cast outside of The Expendables. Trejo is just fucking awesome as the movie's hero. This was yet another fun and totally enjoyable time I had in the movies. It is what it sets itself out to be, a big budget exploitation film. Oh, Tom Savini's role is one of the funniest and most awesome roles of the year. Shit, even Steven Seagal is cool in this one!!

2. Black Swan- Some say it's a horror film, some say it ain't. I say it is. It's a psychological horror flick and a searing one at that. It's a truly nightmarish experience that gets deep into your psyche. It also happens to be beautifully shot and directed. The performances are amazing, especially by the the stunning Natalie Portman. Her much ballyhooed lesbian action with Mila Kunis manages to be both erotic and disturbing. And, that is no mean feat! In the end, what we have here is 2010's best horror film, bar none. And, the most frightening horror movie of last year, as well.

1. Kick Ass- The best movie of last year may not have been a huge box-office smash (although, it should have been!!!), but it is such a fun and, well thoroughly KICK ASS film. That makes it the most appropriately named film of last year! The cast is likable and quite good. This Nicolas Cage's best role in years (this coming from someone who couldn't stand Cage in the last few years). But, it's Hit Girl that fucking owns this one. Her controversial role, as a 12 year old vigilante that kills bad guys and curses like a fucking sailor, is 2010's most awesome character. The ultra-violence makes this one an even harder ass kicker. Without a shadow of a doubt one of the finest super-hero movies ever made.
